Markets reveal the everyday ingredients of a city. In Hanoi, a short walk can pass baskets of herbs, fruit arranged by colour, fresh noodles, and vendors preparing for the day’s meals. Go early if you enjoy watching a neighbourhood wake up, or visit later when the pace feels different.
Look closely and move gently
Allow space for shoppers carrying baskets and workers moving goods. If a walkway is busy, step aside before stopping to look. Ask permission before taking photographs, especially of vendors or their customers, and avoid touching produce unless invited.
Notice what is in season
Markets are a good place to learn by observing. Watch which herbs appear together, how fruit is selected, and what ingredients are being prepared in quantity. If you are shopping, ask about price and quantity before choosing, and bring small notes for easier payment.
You do not need to buy much to enjoy a market visit. A little attention and courtesy can turn a quick walk into a vivid lesson in how food moves through the city.
